9 Firefighters Injured in NJ Residence Fire

Nine firefighters were injured yesterday battling a 3 story residence fire in Maplewood, NJ.  At least nine firefighters were injured tonight while battling a three-alarm blaze that destroyed an abandoned house in Irvington, authorities said.

The fire broke out around 6 p.m. at 1050 Grove St., a 2 1/2-story wood-frame structure, Deputy Fire Chief Brian Muehe said. Officials had to call for mutual aid from at least three other municipalities, including Maplewood and East Orange, Muehe said.

Maplewood firefighter suffered burns and was taken to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. Another firefighter was taken to University Hospital in Newark with a back injury and two others went to Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark with undisclosed injuries, Muehe said.
