Five firefighters were injured, one seriously, in a house fire reached only after traversing an iced-over private road on Thursday night.
The house, on Rip Rap Road, suffered major damage to an upstairs room and to a room downstairs, Dooms Volunteer Fire Co chief Mike Fisher said
A truck from the New Hope company was damaged because a portion of the driveway to the house was washed out.
One firefighter was seriously injured when he fell through rotten wood on the porch while four others received minor injuries walking up an icy driveway that Fisher said reminded him of a logging road.
Firefighters from the Dooms, New Hope and Wilson companies brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes after finally getting up the driveway, Fisher said.
