4 Dallas Firefighters Injured in Roof Collapse

Four Dallas firefighters were hurt while trying to put out a
blaze at a small one-story home in south Oak Cliff early Wednesday
morning.

When firefighters first arrived shortly about 12:30
a.m., they found the wood-frame house at 4036 Fernwood Ave. had flames
coming out of the back of the roof.

Since there was a car parked
in the driveway, rescuers feared there was someone inside the house, so
their attack was aggressive.

With one firefighter on the roof and
more inside, crews were making good progress putting out the flames
when one section of the roof collapsed.

The firefighter on top
fell through, landing near a crew inside. He was immediately helped
outside and taken to Parkland Hospital with facial burns and smoke
inhalation. He was listed in serious condition.

A second
firefighter also suffered from smoke inhalation and was also admitted to
the hospital, where he was being held for observation. Two others
received minor burns from debris that fell on them and were treated and
released from a hospital.

A man who rented the home said he was
in the process of moving out. He said the owner had told him the
property was in foreclosure.

No one else was injured in the fire.

Investigators are now working to find the cause of the fire but said it was suspicious.
