Crews fought a fire Sunday afternoon that collapsed the garage of a home in Upper Allen Township, Cumberland County, briefly trapping two firefighters.
Both firefighters were quickly extracted with only minor injuries, but were taken to the hospital as a precaution, according to John Bruetsch, Cumberland County’s emergency services spokesman.
Although first responders were initially told that two children may have been trapped inside the residence, that report was unfounded, and the children were located safely, Bruetsch said. No injuries other than the two firefighters were reported, according to Bruetsch.
The initial call for a garage fire on the 2100 block of Hastings Drive came in around 2:15 p.m., Bruetsch said. The fire had spread to the rest of the home by the time crews arrived, and the garage collapsed ten to fifteen minutes later, Bruetsch said.
The damage to the home is severe, Bruetsch said, and a second home adjacent to the blaze sustained extensive melting of its siding.
Dozens of trucks responded, and 60 to 70 firefighters were involved in the fight, Bruetsch estimated. The Life Lion MedEvac helicopter was also used.
Fire marshals from the Pennsylvania State Police will investigate the cause of the fire, Bruetsch said.
