A large plume of black smoke that could be seen from miles away in Denver Tuesday stemmed from a fire that damaged six buildings just south of I-70 and York Street and injured two firefighters.
Denver Fire officials responded to the second alarm fire at 4236 York Street shortly before noon Tuesday.
Greg Pixley, a spokesperson for the Denver Fire Department, said the fire started in an unoccupied home that fire crews originally thought was abandoned. It then spread to a store and four other nearby buildings, which Pixley said may have been abandoned.
Two firefighters were injured fighting the flames — one with a back injury and the other with minor burns, Pixley said.
