The FFPM driving a critical pt. to the ER entered a controlled intersection with preemptive device. The traffic light turned green with out indicating he had captured the control. As he eased into the turn a police vehicle responding to an unrelated call crossed the intersection lights and siren on the red with out ever slowing down. The ambulance made a minor evasive change in direction as the police officer driving his vehicle made a very evasive manuover. No accident occured nor did the patient or paramedic in the back notice any harsh movement. This is not the first incident of this type in my area or anyones I am sure.
My department has a very comprehensive policy regarding emergency driving. As the policy indicates even on a green light we are to slow down, cover the brake, and accoount for all lanes of travel. Following this policy avoided what could have been a very serious accident. I commended my firefighter for following the policy and used this example again to demonstrate the need to always maintain your situational awaresness. Remeber, that’s why we have policies, rules, and guidelines.
