March 12, 2005
An Anderson County Sheriff’s deputy is in intensive care, after a car hit him while he was directing traffic. Deputy Alex Burdette was trying to assist a driver with car problems on Hwy 81 near Hayes Rd. on Friday. Officials with the Sheriff’s Office said that’s when another driver hit him.
Witnesses say Burdette was thrown back 30 to 40 feet from the impact of the car. Burdette was airlifted by medical helicopter to Greenville Memorial Hospital from the scene of the accident. Deputies said Burdette has spent four years with the Sheriff’s Office and is also a Marine Corps. veteran.
Members of the law enforcement community have gathered at the hospital to support Burdette.
“Alex is just an outstanding young man,” said Anderson County Sheriff David Crenshaw. “I wonder why such stuff as this happens to people like that. A marine, a young family man with two small children. (He’s) just a great guy. We’re proud to have him as a member of the department, and hope we’ll still have him.”
Burdette is in serious condition in the intensive care unit at Greenville Memorial Hopsital.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
