Traffic was stalled on Interstate 95 in Chatham County early Sunday after a string of crashes, including one involving a police car and an ambulance.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were investigating a wreck on I-95 north between the Interstate 16 and Ga. 204 exits when the pile-up occurred, police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wilson said.
A tractor trailer was heading north around 1 a.m. when the driver veered out of his lane, Wilson said. The truck struck a police cruiser and another car, causing it to hit a third vehicle. The truck also struck an ambulance, which then hit another vehicle, Wilson said. One driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No officers or paramedics were injured. However, the truck did cause significant damage to the vehicles, including the police car, Wilson said. The wreck also blocked the road for several hours.
The identity of the tractor trailer driver was not available. He is under investigation and charges are pending
