INDIAN LAND, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Three firefighters are recovering after battling a large house fire in Indian Land Sunday afternoon.
Crews responded to a home on Baker Creek Avenue with heavy fire conditions. Indian Land Fire District and Pineville Fire Department were first on the scene.
Officials say that due to rapidly deteriorating conditions and extreme heat, crews were forced to evacuate the structure. During the evacuation, a “mayday” was declared, which is called when a firefighter is in a life-threatening situation. The call was cleared once all firefighters were accounted for outside the structure.
During the incident, three firefighters sustained non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Officials say the firefighters are expected to make a full recovery.
“This incident serves as a sobering reminder of how demanding and hazardous the fire service can be. Firefighters place themselves in dangerous conditions every day to protect the lives and property of the communities we serve,” the Indian Land Fire District said in a post Sunday.
The Fort Mill Fire, Charlotte Fire, and Steele Creek Fire also assist in the call.
