As a part of a tour of our ARFF station, civilians were taken on a tour of the airfield in two ARFF apparatus. At one point the firefighters involved proceeded to have a ‘water fight’ with the turrets on their respective apparatus. Due to the pressure of water hitting the windshield of one of the trucks the window blew into the truck and injured the firefighter operating that truck.
What started out as a prank went bad fast. A simple thought to the hydraulics involved would have shown how dangerous this could be. Even on low flow those trucks throw over 300 gals/min. Horseplay is always dangerous, but when civilians are involved it becomes almost criminal.
