2-5-05-A DeKalb County firefighter says he owes a colleague a steak dinner — and his life.
Capt. David Coholich had just entered a burning residence at the Wilshire Condominiums Saturday afternoon when he fell through the floor.
“I saw my life pass before my eyes,” Coholich said. “The flames kept getting more and more around me, and I thought I’m not going to get through this.”
Colleague Michael Sontag pulled him to safety, and Coholich escaped with minor burns to his arms. “I call him a hero,” Coholich said. Sontag said he was just doing his job.”We look out for each other, and we do what we have to do to make sure everyone goes home,” Sontag said. “It was more the thought of what if I don’t pull him out. How am I going to think about that?”Coholich said he plans to buy Sontag a steak dinner and perhaps a drink.
No residents were injured in the fire, which burned two condominiums.”I just saw lots and lots of smoke blowing out the front and the back,” Angela Rivers, a resident, said. “I’m still a little shaken up, because I was sleeping in a deep sleep when they knocked on the door.”
