She is the first female CDF firefighter to die in the line of duty. Officals say 24 year-old Eva Shicke of Arnold died yesterday after she and six other firefighters were caught when flames overtook them on the fire line. Shicke was in her fifth year as a seasonal firefighter for CDF but this was her first season with the Columbia-based Helitack crew. CDF Battalion Chief Jeff Millar desribed her as “tough as nails.” Shicke was a graduate of Cal State Stanislaus and was planning to be come a nurse. She is the 70th firefighter fatality in CDF’s history, and the first woman to die in the line of duty. There are currently 415 female firefighters in the department.
