CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — UPDATED: 4:15 p.m. 3/12/23
A veteran firefighter was injured while battling a blaze at a vacant Charleston residence Sunday morning. The Charleston Fire Department reports a portion of the building’s second floor collapsed, pinning the firefighter under debris.
Capt. John Hastings, an 18-year veteran of the Charleston Fire Department, was taken to an area trauma center by EMS workers, according to a news release from the Charleston Fire Department.
The news release said emergency crews arrived to a structure fire in the 700 block of Crescent Road shortly after 10:30 a.m.
Fire crews report the rescue took about 10 minutes to complete and Hastings’ injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin released the following statement regarding the incident:
“The men and women of the Charleston Fire Department work hard every day to keep our community safe and we were reminded, once again today, of their commitment to service and their bravery in the face of danger. Thank you to the CFD companies that responded this morning and those who helped get Captain Hastings to safety.”
No additional injuries were reported.
The blaze remains under investigation by state fire officials.
