FIREFIGHTER FOUND LODD IN STRUCTURAL FIRE-HONG KONG
The Secret List www.FireFighterCloseCalls.com
Special Note: We received a few brief questions on why we are posting non-North American LODD’s recently. Its not recent-its always been that way-since we started The Secret List in 1998 we post all LODD’s, as they all related to the job we all do. In addition to the several thousand non-North American TSL subscribers, I figure that, for example, a Firefighter lost in Hong Kong-or anywhere else-is worthy of sharing with the rest of the members of The Secret List to both learn from and honor.
We regret to pass on that Honk Kong Fire Services Senior Station Officer Thomas Cheung, a 30-year-old firefighter, has died in the Line of Duty, after fighting a 4 alarm fire in Hong Kong yesterday. They are only now getting the fire under control.
Firefighter Cheung is survived by his wife and four-month-old child. Cheung, who was a senior station officer, was found unconscious in a stairwell after losing contact with his firefighters for about half an hour. The 30-year-old was confirmed dead at 2149 hours.
Four of Cheung’s Firefighters were hospitalized for smoke inhalation and dehydration, and are all reported to be in stable condition. Numerous firefighter rescue teams attempted to find him following his not being accounted for.
The fire, which began late yesterday morning, is now contained to the third floor of Amoycan Industrial Centre, where it started. The building is 66 years old and was not fitted with a sprinkler system, which is not required for older buildings under current regulations. Initial reports of a fire at a mini storage unit in the building were made at 10:59am.
The subdivided storage unit where the fire started was one of over 200 cubicles rented out by SC Storage on the third floor.. Each cubicle was individually locked and had to be broken into by firefighters.
Around 200 of SC Storage’s clients, who stored items in the facility, have formed a group of “victims” on Facebook to demand compensation from the company. Under their leases, the items they kept in the facility are not protected by fire insurance.
