RIPLEY – Three EMTs who were hospitalized today after they were hurt helping a woman in labor are expected to recover, police said. The Ripley (Brown County) Fire Department EMTs were helping a pregnant woman in full labor down stairs from the second story of an apartment building in the 300 block of Main St. about 6 a.m., said Ripley Police Sgt. Don Newman.
A brace supporting the stairs gave way, causing the stairs to collapse, he said. “Everything broke way,” he said. The woman was not injured, but one EMT suffered a leg injury, another had a back injury and the third passed out briefly after she hit her head during the fall, he said. The four are at Brown County General Hospital in Georgetown today. Police will continue investigating the collapse and plan to call in a building inspector today.
