All,

Bad news from Thailand as 4 Firefighters have been killed in the Line of Duty – and one occupant has also been killed in a fire at a large dwelling fire in western Bangkok. around 0600 on Saturday. The Firefighters from the Bangkok Fire & Rescue Department, Volunteer Firefighters Kanaphob Prapai, 44, Samatcha Nilthong, 48, Attapol Thuamthong, 26, and Suthat Plianklad, 38.
The collapse happened when the Firefighters were attempting to rescue a man who was trapped inside a bathroom. 7 people escaped with the help of Firefighters, however, the one victim had become trapped in a downstairs bathroom which prompted the rescue effort by the members. The building collapsed and there is fear more may have been lost. We’ll post more as applicable. Our condolences to all those affected. Rest In peace.
==FDNY MEMBERS TRAPPED-RESCUED-SERIOUS INJURIES

2 FDNY Firefighters were trapped and seriously injured while they operated at a 4 alarm fire in Queens early yesterday morning. The fire was at a strip of stores on Springfield Boulevard in Queens around 0220 hours.

Firefighters were operating in the back of the building when a collapse occurred, trapping two Firefighters. According to AC Joe Jardin, “A portion of the roof collapsed trapping two of our members initially,” Chief Jardin said at the scene. “They discovered the member under a 20 foot by 20 foot section of wood joisted roof, a heavy section of roof with fire in proximity where the member was trapped.”

The most critically injured member suffered several significant burns and a compression injury. KTIYP’s.
==MICHIGAN FIREFIGHTER RECOVERING FROM CYANIDE POISONING AT FIRE SCENE

A Michigan Fire Chief was poisoned with cyanide while fighting a fire in Alpena County two weeks ago.

Matt Cohoon, 37, Chief of the Green Township FD, was a mystery to doctors when he showed up at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena on March 16. A blood test revealed he had cyanide poisoning — a known complication faced by Firefighters as we work in the smoke produced by burning plastics and other household products. His health future is uncertain, and the poisonous gas has taken pieces of his memory.

Chief Cohoon was found slumped outside the burning home and his condition went from bad to worse. Cyanide is a fast-acting, potentially deadly chemical given off during the burning of certain products, including paper, cotton, wool, and plastics...found at every fire scene.

Paramedics at the scene gave the chief oxygen, but when he had a seizure, they transported him to the hospital. For the next few days, Chief Cohoon had 20 to 30 seizures a day as doctors contemplated what to do with him.
Memory loss is a side effect of cyanide poisoning, he’s learned — and of the antidote given to counteract the poisoning. His memory is spotting, blacking out moments from two days or six months ago, and doctors aren’t sure if he’ll get those memories back. The seizures are down to a few a day, but he can’t drive. As soon as he can, though, Chief Cohoon hopes to get back to fighting fires.

==REMEMBERING COLERAIN TOWNSHIP FIREFIGHTERS

Capt. Robin Broxterman and Firefighter Brian Schira who were killed in the Line of Duty while operating at a fire in a home on Squirrelsnest Lane on April 4, 2008. The floor collapsed while Broxterman and Schira went to the first floor the burning home. The fire had been burning in the basement, and when the floor gave away, they were dropped into the basement fire.
REPORT, AUDIO & VIDEO RESOURCES:
The Colerain reports have mattered in several cases, including the City of Defiance, Ohio, where FF’s studied the report and following that-applied the lessons at a fire they responded to-and their scene operations were positively altered due to what they learned from Colerain.
