The Paramedic Supervisor from Rostraver-West Newton Emergency Medical Service who was killed in the Line of Duty is (corrected spelling) Matt C. Smelser, 44. PM Supervisor Smelser arrived at the crash about 0530 hours west of the Smithton exit in South Huntingdon when he was fatally struck by that tractor-trailer rig. Apparently EMS personnel were on the scene, tending to the victim of the crash. The weather conditions at the time caused the roadway to become icy and their ambulance was struck by another vehicle…and then PM Supervisor Smelser was also struck by the tractor-trailer truck. This crash occurred in the same county as the crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike that killed five people and sent 60 to the hospital, closing 86 miles of the turnpike in both directions between New Stanton and Breezewood earlier today.
Rostraver-West Newton Emergency Medical Service runs over 8,000 calls per year with stations located throughout the Mon Valley Area and is the parent organization of The Mon Valley Search and Rescue Divers, and also the Tri-County Tactical Rescue Team.
