As an update to our posting last evening, the Assistant Chief of the Charlotte Road-Van Wyck VFD in Lancaster County was killed in the Line of Duty last night while directing traffic around a previous wreck.
Assistant Chief Dennis Straight (spelling corrected-our apologies), age 59, of Lancaster died around 2000 hours at the hospital.
Chief Straight was a member for than 20 years with the Charlotte Road/Van Wyck department that serves much of the Indian Land and middle areas of Lancaster County, between Lancaster and the North Carolina border.
The vehicle that hit Straight was driven by a 33-year-old man, who was not injured. The vehicle was turning onto S.C. 5 from U.S 521 when Chief Straight was hit. Chief Straight was directing traffic on the on-ramp from northbound U.S. 521 when he was hit.
The earlier crash happened around 1815 when Chief Straight went to the scene to help with traffic control.
