Friday, April 29, 2011 Thursday, April 21, 2011 Hazard Zone Management Conference Addresses Major Problems for the Fire Service There are between 30 to 40 firefighter fatalities every year while operating inside of an IDLH Hazard Zone (along with thousands of other injuries). According to NIOSH firefighter LODD reports, over 90% of these fatalities are due to 3 major factors; 1) inadequate incident command and control 2) poor situational awareness and decision-making 3) lack of initial and ongoing size-up of fire location and the effect the fire is having on the buildings structure elements. Realizing that the fire service has been missing a comprehensive, NIMS Type IV and V, hazard zone incident management certification system has lead to the inception of the Blue Card Command Certification program. This is a comprehensive, certification based program that uses Chief Alan Brunacini’s Fire Command textbooks for the programs curriculum and training program. The Fire Command Incident Management System is based on over 2 million local Type IV and V responses and has been used by hundreds of fire departments worldwide for over 30 years. With the inception of the Blue Card Incident Command Certification program, Chief Brunacini has also compiled a comprehensive two and half day conference. The second annual Brunacini’s Hazard Zone Management Conference is the result of the collaboration of many national experts and world-renowned speakers in the fire service. The Hazard Zone Management Conference will take place at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN on October 17th to 19th, 2011. This conference will focus on all 3 of the major hazard zone breakdowns that are killing and injuring firefighters today; incident command systems, the critical decision making process, along with the most up to date and inclusive fire/ burn studies done over the past 2 years. Speaking on the compilation of the conference, Chief Alan Brunacini states, “We have assembled the most capable group of incident command and tactical operations experts for our conference faculty. They are all highly experienced, smart, street oriented, no-baloney guys. We should all go home with a boatload of ideas and projects that will make our departments safer and more effective.” The conference will take an in depth look at the major command systems that are being used in the fire service to manage hazard zone operations. Day 1 will feature Gordon Graham and Alan Brunacini. Day 2 will feature the most recent fire studies conducted by UL and NIST. Leading the discussion will be Dan Madrzykowski - Fire Research Division NIST, along with James Dalton - Coordinator of Research and Development Chicago FD. Day 3 will feature Jay Reardon – President of MABAS and Billy Goldfeder – Deputy Fire Chief Loveland-Symmes FD. Followed by an open forum panel discussion hosted by Alan Brunacini. The conference will also include several breakout sessions that will feature some of the leading fire service instructors in the country; Forest Reeder & Eddie Buchanan – Evaluating Judgment and Decision Making on the Fire Ground, Alan Brunacini, Dennis Rubin, Terry Garrison & Larry Schultz – Executive Leadership in Managing Hazard Zone Operations, Brian Kazmierzak (The Fire Engineering / IFSFI Instructor of the Year) - Building simulations using Fire Studio v5.0 and the technical management of a command training center. The 2nd Annual Brunacini’s Hazard Zone Management Conference will help company and command officers make better decisions that will potentially eliminate the lethal and/or costly mistakes that cause injury, death, and unnecessary fire losses in your local response areas. The conference will also provide its participants with leading edge information; presentations, interactions and networking that can be taken home and applied in your department the very next day.
