Thursday, September 2, 2010 Hazard Zone Management Seminar Addresses Major Problems for the Fire Service There are between 30 to 40 firefighter fatalities every year while operating inside of an IDLH Hazard Zone (along with thousands of other injuries). According to NIOSH firefighter LODD reports, over 90% of these fatalities are due to 3 major factors; 1) inadequate incident command and control 2) poor situational awareness and decision-making 3) lack of initial and ongoing size-up of fire location and the effect the fire is having on the buildings structure elements. Realizing that the fire service has been missing a comprehensive, NIMS Type IV and V, hazard zone incident management certification system has lead to the inception of the Blue Card Command Certification program. This is a comprehensive, certification based program that uses Chief Alan Brunacini’s Fire Command textbooks for the programs curriculum and training program. The Fire Command Incident Management System is based on over 2 million local Type IV and V responses and has been used by hundreds of fire departments world- wide for over 30 years. With the inception of the Blue Card Incident Command Certification program, Chief Brunacini has also compiled a comprehensive two and half day seminar. The first annual Hazard Zone Management Seminar is the result of the collaboration of many national experts and world-renowned speakers in the fire service. The Hazard Zone Management Seminar will take place at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN on October 18th to 20th, 2010. This seminar will focus on all 3 of the major hazard zone breakdowns that are killing and injuring firefighters today; incident command systems, the critical decision making process, along with the most up to date and inclusive fire/ burn studies done over the past 2 years. The seminar will take an in depth look at the major command systems that are being used in the fire service to manage hazard zone operations. There will be several presenters that will include: Pruitt Small – Southwest Type I overhead team command staff, Jay Reardon – President MABAS, Dennis Rubin – Washing DC Fire Chief. All of the presenters will be followed by an open forum panel discussion hosted by Alan Brunacini and Bobby Halton – Editor of Fire Engineering Magazine. Day 2 will feature Gordon Graham speaking on The Top Ten Things that get Firefighters in Trouble, followed by an analysis of the critical decision making process that is presented by Matt Fratus and Mike Alder of the San Bernardino Fire Department. Day 3 will present the most recent fire studies conducted by UL and NIST. Leading the discussion will be Dan Madrzykowski - Fire Research Division NIST, along with James Dalton - Coordinator of Research and Development Chicago FD. The seminar will also include several breakout sessions that will feature some of the leading fire service instructors in the country; Don Abbott - Managing the 5 most common Haz Mat incidents in the fire service, Timothy R. Merinar (NIOSH) - What’s injuring and killing Firefighters today, Brian Kazmierzak (Clay FD, FF close calls.com) - Building simulations using Fire Studio v4.1 and the technical management of a command training center. Speaking on the compilation of the seminar, Chief Alan Brunacini, Phoenix Fire Department (ret.) states, “We have assembled the most capable group of incident command and tactical operations experts for our conference faculty. They are all highly experienced, smart, street oriented, no-baloney guys. We should all go home with a boatload of ideas and projects that will make our departments safer and more effective.” The Hazard Zone Management Seminar will help company and command officers make better decisions that will potentially eliminate the lethal and/or costly mistakes that cause injury, death, and unnecessary fire losses in your local response areas. The seminar will also provide its participants with leading edge information; presentations, interactions and networking that can be taken home and applied in your department the very next day. Monday, March 15, 2010 We are pleased to announce that registration for the 22nd Annual Midwest Hazardous Materials Response Conference is open. The conference will be held on April 30 and May 1, 2010, at the Northbrook (IL) Hilton Hotel. The conference features a lot of great new instructors and workshops this year that you won't want to miss. You can download the conference brochure and register at www.emerysafety.com. Take advantage of the Early Bird registration pricing by registering immediately. REGISTRATION - Perhaps the biggest improvement this year is the addition of a new third party registration system. This process is a lot more user friendly than our old system, while providing us with far more flexibility and utility. For example, the process tracks session sizes and automatically offers the attendee the option of a waiting list once a session is full. The system automatically sends an email notification if space becomes available in that session. We can also track meals and other special conference events to help the Hilton plan ahead. HOTEL - The Hilton Hotel has only blocked 190 guest rooms for the conference this year. The hotel reservation link on our web site is the fastest and easiest way to reserve your room. Once the room block is full you will need to find alternate hotel accommodations. THE HILTON FILLS QUICKLY SO MAKE YOUR HOTEL RESERVATION TODAY! The Hilton Hotel will be offering all MIdwest Haz Mat Conference attendees complimentary guest room internet access again this year. GRANTS - Funding is tight again this year and training always seems to one of the first budget items to be trimmed during a budget crisis. We realize that high quality training is needed more than ever when funding gets scarce and you have to get more "bang for the buck". The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has listed the Midwest Haz Mat Conference as one of the acceptable haz mat training conferences eligible for using Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP) Grant Program funds. We suggest contacting your Local Emergency Planning Committee to request funding to attend the conference. Copy and paste (exactly) the following extremely long web link to access the PHMSA HMEP FAQ page for more information: http://www.phmsa.dot.gov/portal/site/PHMSA/menuitem.ebdc7a8a7e39f2e55cf2031050248a0c/?vgnextoid=3980e5b91c761210VgnVCM1000001ecb7898RCRD&vgnextchannel=b9623074e1db8110VgnVCM1000009ed07898RCRD&vgnextfmt=print#QA_12 NOTE: The PHMHS web link above may be truncated in your email, so be sure to copy and paste the entire URL into your web browser. NIPSTA - The Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy (NIPSTA) will be supporting our conference again this year, providing excellent "hands-on" capability that is not possible at the hotel. The Chlorine Institute is presenting a hands-on workshop on chlorine and the Next Generation Railcar at NIPSTA this year with some great props. NIPSTA is located just 4 miles from the conference hotel and shuttle buses will provide transportation to and from the off-site workshop. This resource allows us to accommodate those workshops that require room for exercises, haz mat props or a chemistry lab. For more information on NIPSTA please go to http://nipsta.org and click on the "Training Facilities" button to get a look at their impressive array of training opportunities. MICHIGAN STATE POLICE - The Michigan State Police Haz Mat Training cadre will also be providing equipment and assistance again this year. Last year was a great year for this conference, but we want to have an even bigger group this year. Please help us continue to provide the best haz mat training in the Midwest by forwarding this email to every colleague in your address book. The conference brochure is being mailed, but the best response still comes form the emails you send to your friends. Stay tuned for future conference updates.
