My first FDIC was in 1977 and one of the many things I heard in Memphis that year was about this “elderly” Fire Chief in Pennsylvania that required his firefighters, his volunteer Firefighters to participate in aerobic dancing. He wanted them to stay fit! He what?!
“Chief Hutch’s Dancing Bears”-as they were known, an aerobics group of Greensburg Firefighters led by Fire Chief Ed Hutchinson, became well known for their unique brand of fitness.
Several years later I had a chance to meet this extraordinary Fire Chief of the Greensburg PA FD-Ed “Hutch” Hutchinson…and while in his 70’s…you would have thought he was 30.
Sadly Chief Hutchinson passed away today at age 96. He served as THE FIRE CHIEF FROM 1953 until 2016. Yeah-1953 until 2016. He was Fire Chief until he was 94 years old and always passed EVERY physical requirement.
PLEASE CHECK OUT HIS VERY COOL STORY:
Chief Hutchinson joined the GFD’s Hose Co. No. 3 on Nov. 13, 1939, which was 48 years after the fire company was formed. His father, uncle and grandfather also were in the fire department. Until his retirement, his service in the fire department had been interrupted only by his service in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
His wife, Dolores Kralik Hutchinson, whom he married in 1947, died on Feb. 9. The couple had three children, Keith, Karen and Kevin. Both sons have been active in the fire department. Funeral arrangements are private, according to the Leo M. Bacha Funeral Home in Greensburg.
Our sincere condolences to the Chiefs family, friends and especially the Greensburg FD who were certainly lucky to have had such an amazing Chief who was years ahead of his time-and kept living well into those years. Rest In Peace Chief.
