First responders face danger every day, but one report shows police and other emergency workers face an alarming challenge.
The Ruderman Family Foundation report shows first responders are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty. It found that first responders have a heightened risk for depression, PTSD and suicide.
In 2017, there were at least 103 firefighter suicides and 140 police officer suicides. In contrast, 93 firefighters and 129 police officers died in the line of duty.
The Cedar Park Police Department is hoping to change that by providing support.
Starting Thursday, the department is hosting a two-day training at New Hope Church aimed at helping all first responders, police, fire, military, corrections, dispatchers, chaplains, retired first responders, professional staff, clinicians and spouses who work in or with the public safety field.
