On the morning of June 26, the Maywood (N.J.) Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on Route 17 northbound.
The apparatus was positioned uphill and a distance from the fully involved vehicle. As crews were masking up, one of the struts from the front hood of the vehicle on fire exploded and was launched like a missile, striking the first due engine and shattering the driver’s side windshield.
The metal rod can be seen on the bottom left of the photo.
Luckily no firefighters were injured.
