Sunday, a St. Louis Fire Department captain fell into a burning attic space while venting a roof; other firefighters on the roof pulled him to safety.
The captain, a 25-year veteran, suffered first- and second-degree burns to his face and hands. He was transported to a hospital and kept overnight for observation, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
A fire department spokesman said the captain was talking and in good spirits.
Firefighters were working a two-story, two-family townhouse fire when the incident occurred. Three other firefighters who were on the roof rescued the captain and assisted him down a ladder to an awaiting ambulance.
