Six firefighters were hospitalized Friday afternoon after battling a fire that destroyed a chicken barn in the 10600 block of Smithville Western Road, just south of Lattasburg.
The six firefighters were taken to Wooster Community Hospital with non-life-threatening heat-related issues, New Pittsburg Fire & Rescue Assistant Chief Mike Priest said. No civilians were injured in the fire.
New Pittsburg Fire was dispatched at 12:17 p.m. and arrived on scene at 12:30 p.m. Firefighters found a 60-by-652-foot chicken barn fully involved. Two additional chicken barns of the same size were 40 feet from the structure on fire. A 40-by-70-foot commodity storage building was 40 feet from the fire.
The original building was a total loss but due to firefighter efforts, the remaining three buildings were saved with minimal damage, according to a press release from New Pittsburg Fire & Rescue.
