Montana firefighters trying to bring the Lolo Peak Fire under control had to halt efforts when shots were fired in the area where they were working.
The fire has grown to the point where a mandatory evacuation was issued for Ravalli County residents. NBC Montana reports that police issued a warning that aggressive behavior toward firefighters by residents who did not want to evacuate would be penalized.
The shots fired, however, came from a man shooting squirrels on his property. No firefighters were injured.
