Saturday, a Butler County, Kan., EMS rig was en route to a motor vehicle crash when it was violently struck by a semi.
According to one witness, the two operating the ambulance had to be extricated, but were uninjured. The truck driver was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. The force of the collision broke the semi’s front axle and kingpin.
The ambulance was responding to a wreck on the turnpike and had to use the turnaround access to reach the wreck site. When the ambulance swung right to make the turn, the semi failed to yield, the witness said.
The ambulance was running lights and sirens and all occupants were wearing seatbelts.
