Three firefighters were hurt at a house fire this morning north of Lake City. Two suffered injuries after being trapped momentarily inside a basement.
The fire was reported about 9:30 a.m. on the 14200 block of 38th Avenue Northeast, said Seattle Fire spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick. An elderly woman who lived inside woke up and smelled smoke.
When Seattle firefighters arrived, they saw thick black smoke pouring out the front door. Two firefighters walked inside and slipped down a staircase, landing in the basement.
They were momentarily trapped in the basement before breaking out a window and jumping about 10 feet to the ground. A steep hillside drop-off is adjacent to that side of the house.
One suffered burns to his wrists and the other injured a shoulder. A third firefighter suffered heat exhaustion fighting the fire. All three were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
The elderly woman is fine. But her two cats died in the fire.
