Four families were displaced and a firefighter is recovering from injuries following a blaze at a Beekman Road apartment building, Beekman Fire Chief Greg Rayburn said.
The building, which dates back nearly 70 years, was destroyed by the fire Sunday night. The front of the building facing Beekman Road was blackened and the roof was nearly missing. Debris surrounded the house and water continued to drip from the ceiling into the first-floor apartments Monday morning.
Beekman firefighters responded at 9:12 p.m. to the report of a structure fire at 1000 Beekman Road, Rayburn said.
“When they arrived on scene they found a multiple-occupancy residence with flames coming out on both floors,” Rayburn said, adding a concentration of flames on the right side of the building. “Once the fire got up into the attic, it went through the whole attic and spread into the whole residence.”
