We regret to pass on that an ambulance struck a semitrailer truck that was stalled on an interstate in Brooklyn Center (MN) , killing 24-year-old paramedic Marina Challeen in the Line of Duty, and leaving her driver hospitalized.
The crash occurred on eastbound Interstate 694 about 1900 hours Monday, when the HealthEast ambulance hit the semi on the right shoulder with a tow truck in the apex where Interstate-694 and I-94 split.
Paramedic Susanna G. Kelly, 27, was driving the ambulance, and she was taken to North Memorial Medical Center and is expected to survive her injuries-they were the only two on the rig.
The semi’s driver was not injured, the patrol added. The tow truck driver also escaped injury.
The ambulance was heading from Monticello to north Minneapolis without its emergency lights or siren engaged when it “attempted to merge across the apex and subsequently struck the back of the semi, and major impact happened on the front passenger side.”
The semi had been sitting there for 15 to 16 minutes because of mechanical issues.
