A fierce fire destroyed a commercial building in Duryea late Saturday night.
One firefighter suffered a minor knee injury while fighting the blaze at the former LAG Towing building at 83 Foote Ave., according to Joe Korea, chief of Germania Hose Company, based in Duryea. The injured firefighter was treated at a local hospital and released, Korea said.
One person who reportedly lives in the building was not at home at the time of the fire, according to Korea.
Fire crews responded to a reported fire at the building at about 10 p.m. Saturday, Korea said. Heavy black smoke at first obscured the extent of the fire, but responding crews advised the building was engulfed and fire departments from throughout the region responded.
Firefighters had difficulty finding sufficient water supplies to battle the intense fire, Korea said.
A state police fire marshal responded, but the cause of the fire is undetermined as of Sunday and the building is “a total loss,” the chief said.
“All companies did a terrific job,” Korea said. “Everybody went home, so it’s a good day.”
Korea said it was not clear as of Sunday who owns the property that housed the destroyed building.
