UL FSRI is pleased release a new on-line training course as part of the National Institute of Justice project “Full-Scale Experiments to Study the Impact of Ventilation on Fire Patterns.”
Divided into three sections: Heat & Temperature, Heat Transfer, and Fire Measurements, this course was designed to teach users about heat transfer (e.g., convection, conduction, and radiation), about the types of measurements made during fire experiments (e.g., temperature, pressure, velocity), and about the instrumentation used to make the measurements (e.g., thermocouples, heat flux gauges). After taking this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the difference between heat and temperature
- Understand the basic principles of heat transfer
- Describe the instrumentation used to collect data in fire conditions and how that data is applied to the understanding of heat transfer
NFPA 1033, the Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator, requires that fire investigators shall have and maintain up to date knowledge of these topics. The course covers thermodynamics (heat transfer) and thermometry (thermal measurements). These are two of the topics identified in the course.
