Firefighters are facing more traumatic situations than ever and they’re calling on authorities to provide more support.
The plea was made on International Firefighters’ Day on Saturday by Palmerston North station officer Kerry Williams, who says firefighters are now attending life-threatening and medical events, and even people threatening to die by suicide.
The change came about when St John and Fire and Emergency NZ agreed, in 2014, that firefighters would respond to cardiac and respiratory arrests alongside St John to provide first aid support. That includes performing CPR and administering oxygen.
Five years on and Williams said firefighters were still not receiving the right support. “It’s all responsive. There’s not training about how to deal with stuff at the time.”
