We regret to pass on to you that a North Carolina firefighter was struck and killed by a drunk driver while operating at a scene early this morning in Burke County.
Triple Community Fire Department firefighters were dispatched to a call for service for a tree blocking the eastbound and part of the westbound side of Highway 70 East.
One firefighter responded to the scene with a fire apparatus; another responded in his personal vehicle. The firefighters were in the process of clearing debris from the roadway just after midnight when a vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 70 struck one of the firefighters. Forty-year-old firefighter Jason Keith Hensley was killed instantly upon impact.
An investigation into the crash is being conducted by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. No arrangements for Firefighter Hensley have been made at this time.Our condolences to all those affected. More to follow. Rest In Peace.
