Tuesday, January 17, 2012 On Monday afternoon, a Meridian Township ambulance travelling west on Grand River Avenue in Lansing Township toward Sparrow Hospital collided with a car coming off of south bound 127.Lt. Steve Piggott from the Lansing Township Fire Department was one of those who responded to the scene. Though the cause of the crash is still unclear, he says the colder temperatures make it more difficult for emergency vehicles on the road and drivers who try to avoid them."The ice is slippery and when people see the lights, they panic, slam on the breaks which makes you slide...you just got to remain calm and slow down easy," Lt. Piggott said.According to Lt. Piggott, most drivers are good about giving way to emergency vehicles, but those who don't pay attention risk the safety of themselves and others on the road."We have had an ambulance struck from behind because they're (drivers) paying more attention to the accident scene and not enough attention to the vehicle on the road and actually struck the vehicle (ambulance) from behind."It may seem obvious, but emergency responders still want to reiterate a mesasge for those who might just need another reminder."Pay atttention to what the ambulance is doing, slow down, pull off to the side if you can. Do whatever is the safest for everybody on the road," Lt. Piggott said. There's no word yet on the condition of the patient and the driver of the vehicle. Both EMS workers were taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.
