Two
firefighters were injured early Saturday after one slipped and injured his back
and the other developed chest pains while fighting a fire at 433 Elmwood Ave.
during "the teeth of the storm," said Acting Chief Michael J. Dillon.
The
3:30 a.m. fire was confined to a rear portion of an unoccupied three-story,
wood-frame residential/commercial structure, Dillon said. The cause is under
investigation.
Dillon
said the blizzard conditions were some of the worst he's seen in 38 years of
firefighting. Trucks got stuck in the snow; establishing a water line took
several tries. Three alarms were called.
Dillon
commended Deputy Assistant Chief Daniel Crowley, the firefighters and the
department, "which rises to the occasion when the chips are down."
