FIREFIGHTER CRITICAL, OTHERS HURT AS APPARATUS IS STRUCK IN PRINCE GEORGES COUNTY, MARYLAND

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 An apparatus crash on I495 (DC Beltway) early this morning in Prince George’s County MD, has left several Firefighters injured with 1 being critical. That FF has been taken to Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, which specializes in severe limb injuries. The other 3 injured firefighters are being treated at PG Trauma. The driver of the tractor trailer and two victims from the Jeep were taken to Medstar in DC. The severity of the civilian’s injuries are unknown. The crash occurred when Engine 828 out of West Lanham Hills VFD was heading back to quarters after responding on a run. It appears the engine was struck by the tractor trailer from behind, sending both vehicles into the concrete barrier separating the Inner and Outer Loops. This initial collision sent wreckage and concrete debris into the northbound lanes of the Beltway, where a Jeep was also caught up in the crash.
