Seaside volunteer firefighter Derek Spivey and three other
firefighters were putting tools away in their fire truck after helping
to clear several fallen trees on U.S. Highway 26 Monday when they heard
other trees cracking.
Suddenly, three or four alder trees crashed onto the truck only a few feet from the firefighters.
“We just took off running,” said Spivey.
No one was injured. The truck was damaged and was towed to the Seaside fire station.
It was the first time anything like that has happened
to him, said Spivey, who has been a firefighter for seven years. Next
time, he added, he will be more cautious
