While the City of New York is entirely covered by FDNY,
there are still several communities-many of them in remote, waterfront/island
areas, that rely on local volunteer fire and EMS companies as well. These
companies, some in existence for well over 100 years, work in concert with and
under the command of FDNY & FDNY-EMS ...and the volunteers are very often
the "first due" first responders.
