Firefighters were called to the home of former District of Columbia
Fire Chief Theodore Coleman for the second time in 36 hours late Tuesday
morning.
Prince George’s County firefighters arrived at Coleman’s Fort
Washington home, located in the 12100 block of Lihou Court, around 11:30
a.m. after a fire broke out on the second floor of the residence.
A contractor, who was hired to clean up from the initial fire on
Sunday, was working inside the home at the time. The man, along with
the Coleman family, were able to escape the fire without injury.
One firefighter suffered a minor burn to his foot while working to
extinguish the blaze. He was taken to a local hospital and is expected
to be released later Tuesday.
Fire officials are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, but say it is not considered suspicious.
The first blaze at the home occurred around 7:30 p.m. Sunday when an
unattended grill accidentally caught the exterior of the garage on fire.
That blaze was quickly extinguished.
Coleman, who served as the Fire Chief in D.C. from 1983 to 1988, was present for both incidents.
Prince George’s County Fire officials say Coleman’s only concern
Tuesday was for the well-being of the injured firefighter. He wanted to
go visit the burn victim in the hospital.
Firefighters were able to save a number of family momentous and photos from Coleman’s time with the fire department.
The damage from both fires is estimated at roughly $105,000.
