Thursday, July 26, 2012 WARSAW, KY (FOX19) -One man is dead and three people have been taken to the hospital after an SUV collided with an ambulance Tuesday morning in Gallatin County.

The crash occurred around 10 a.m. near the intersection of U.S. 127 and Tapering Pointe Road.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Brad Arterburn says the SUV driver, Hunter LeGrand, 22, of Warsaw, KY had been involved in a hit and run accident moments before hitting the ambulance.

"Gallatin County had received a call previously, a reckless driving complaint that they had hit a telephone pole and left the accident scene," said Arterburn.

Arterburn says the ambulance driver, Justin Shields, 21, told rescue crews that he saw the SUV weaving all over the road traveling North on state route 127. 

"He said that he got as far over as he could and tried to stop before the driver of the SUV hit him. He said he could see him cross the center line and saw it coming," said Arterburn.

Arterburn says the impact of the collision flipped the ambulance onto its roof.

"Hit the ambulance head on. The ambulance then flipped, landed on its roof.  The SUV ended up on the side of the road," he said.

A dialysis patient, John Little, 59,  was in the back of the ambulance at the time. Little died later at University Hospital.

It took firefighters nearly a half hour to cut LeGrand out of the wreckage of his vehicle.  LeGrand was flown to University Hospital. Authorities suspect he was driving under the influence of drugs. Charges against LeGrand are pending.

EMT David Waltz, 25,  was in the back of the ambulance and was flown to University Hospital. Shields was taken to University Hospital by Gallatin County EMS.
