Thursday, June 23, 2011 We are providing all visitors to FFCC with the DOWNLOADABLE version of FDNY's SAFETY WEEK BOOKLET DOCUMENT related to SURVIVING THE FIREGROUND.
This document is a great example of how FDNY's leadership "gets it" related to their members safety and survival and relationship with the IAFC and IAFF for SAFETY WEEK 2011. While some may inappropriately "feel" FDNY isn't committed to these issues from years gone by, the proof is in the pudding. Actually, nothing could be further from the truth.
When Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano was Chief of Department, he made a very strong and powerful statement "....those who don't get it-soon will-because they have never had to inform a Mom that her son was killed in the line of duty, especially when it could have been avoided...."
Powerful words that many of you can related to-from a Chief who has unfortunately "been there and done that"-so to speak...but one who also is determined to "turn it around".
This is yet another example of a FD leadership that "gets it"-and in this case, a FD that is the largest municipal fire department in North America, and the second largest in the world after the Tokyo. They (FDNY) have approximately 11,080 fire officers and firefighters and over 3,300 EMTs and paramedics responding to anything we can imagine - with 198 engines, 143 ladders, 300+ EMS units answering 507,000 fire related runs and 1,261,993 EMS runs annually. So if they can do it.....
