On March 22 Smyrna station 4 ran a call for a unresponsive male. On scene we found that the male had OD on Heroine. As the crew was starting an IV. I went to check his pockets. I used a pat down method to see what he had in his pockets. As I was clearing his pockets I was stuck by a used needle. The needle was bent at a 90* and was sticking through his pants. This was the 2nd time in 2 weeks I found a needle this way. They are placing uncapped needles in their pockets that seem to get bent. I got lucky on the first one I found. Not so on the 2nd.
|Do not do a pat down. Lift the top of the pocket to be able to see in it. If you have to, pull the pocket out. Whatever you do, do not put your hand in it.|
