Firefighters in Duplin County are battling a massive church fire on Monday.
Authorities said the blaze started around 8 a.m. at the Rose Hill United Methodist Church located at 314 E. Church Street. A member of the congregation filmed the fire as it consumed the church, which reportedly dates back to 1920. The blaze virtually destroyed the church building.
Matt Barwick, Duplin County Director of Emergency Management, says that the roof collapsed as firefighters made entry, forcing them to move to defensive operations due to safety concerns.
One firefighter broke his arm when roof shingles fell while he was responding to the blaze.
The fire is under control at this time, but the sanctuary is a total loss.
