A firefighter suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound while fighting a massive grass fire that involved seven departments and covered several acres of Michigan’s Battle Creek area.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon after one of the many townships in the area moved in to investigate a smoke along Interstate 94.
Discovering a small grass fire, crews later found that larger fires had engulfed nearby woods and fields, prompting six other agencies to show up. According to the Battle Creek Enquirer, one firefighter from the town of Athens managed to shoot himself in the groin during the incident, likely due to a weapons handling failure or a holster malfunction.
The firefighter was taken to a nearby hospital for a non-life threatening injury.
