It was a nice and warm Saturday afternoon that August 30th in 2008.
A lot of people were enjoying time with families and friends around the barbecue’s, so was I. Up until I got a message from one of my colleagues saying that there was a huge fire in a vacant complex in Ukkel, one of the suburbs in Brussels.
Maydays were send and searches for 2 missing firefighters were still underway. One Chief in training was injured.
Some two hours later I got news the missing firefighters were found dead…
Patrick was a Lieutenant at the HQ station of Brussels, Alain was an Engineer working as a truckie in the 2nd busiest station of Brussels, Anderlecht.
I knew Alain pretty well since he really taught me how to work with the ladder truck…even when I thought I already knew how to…
Karel Lambert is a BC in Brussels and he wrote an article on the incident last year. I’ve attached the article here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/g3t272slv6swo9t/artikel_32_EN.pdf?dl=0
There’s also a short video on that fire. This is the link http://www.brandweermaninnood.be/page/leervideo-ongeval-brusselse-brandweermannen-ukkel
