An Indianapolis firefighter was attacked by a Pit Bull Thursday while responding to a house fire at 1029 North Keystone Avenue.
Steve Conway, with IFD Engine 11, was leaving the house and walking down a sidewalk toward a fire engine when he encountered the dog, which was chained to a post.
The 2- year-old Pit Bull lunged at Conway’s leg, bit through his firefighting gear, pants and boots and punctured his leg. He was taken to Methodist Occupational with non life- threatening injuries for further evaluation.
IMPD and Animal Control were called to the scene. No word on what, if any, action was taken.
As for the fire, firefighters took about 8 minutes to extinguish it in an upstairs bedroom. Damage is estimated at $10,000.
In addition to the Pit Bull that was chained outside, the owner, Tabatha Young, had two other Pit Bulls in cages in the kitchen and a puppy in her car. She was not home at the time of the fire.
