A firefighter was injured today fighting a fire in an abandoned dwelling in Michigan. The issue that has now come up from that fire is inadequate staffing which is a major problem in many, many communities. One example not too far from us is covered at www.iafflocal300.org… where in, Chillicothe Ohio-staffing (and layoffs) is also a serious concern. Any of us don’t have to travel far to find information on the issue.
Well, from where we see it, if the “city fathers” (and MOTHERS) in any community won’t provide what is genuinely and fairly needed to safely do the job-then we have to make it clear what we can-and cannot do without placing ourselves in an environment where the only life risk-is ours. The days of risking our lives for abandoned buildings and care-less politicians probably needs to come to a halt. Staffing is almost always a very valid issue-one that we are passionate about. On the other hand, it’s hard to get passionate about abandoned buildings when most FD’s today have just enough staffing to get by… in real emergencies.
