Chief Sommers, who was 40 years old, had served with Suwannee County Fire Rescue since 2001 and was named the county’s public safety director in November 2012 after serving as interim fire chief since May 2012.
Sommers was traveling to Lake City when a Ford Expedition attempted to turn left onto SW Pinemount Road causing the front of his motorcycle to run into the side of the car. Chief Sommers was transported to Lake City Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

An Indiana volunteer Firefighter accused of killing another Firefighter will spend around six-years behind bars. Yesterday, a Judge sentenced Colby Blake, who was drunk when he was responding to the scene of a crash in Daviess County. On the way to that crash, he hit another vehicle being driven by another volunteer Firefighter, Kendall Murphy, died in the crash.
Blake previously entered a guilty plea to causing death when operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was twice over the legal limit when he turned out on the initial run.
