You younger members of The Secret List may not know who Henny Youngman is, but he was a great comedian known as the “King of the One Liners”…and he (IMO) was hilarious:
….An accused drunk was in front of a judge. The judge says “My good man, you’ve been brought here for drinking.” The drunk says “Okay judge, let’s get started.
….Some people ask the secret of our long marriage. We go to a restaurant two times a week. A little candlelight, drinking, dinner, music and dancing. She goes Tuesdays, I go Fridays.
….A guy complains of a headache when drinking. Another guy says, “Do what I do. I put my head on my wife’s bosom, and the headache goes away.” The next day, the man says, “Did you do what I told you to?” Yes, I sure did. And by the way, you have a really nice house!

OK…..certainly drinking “too much” and its relationship to humor has always been around. Unfortunately people are more apt to joke about drinking especially when it’s a problem-or it’s the “elephant in the room.”…as uncontrolled drinking as well as alcoholism is certainly a big deal in our business. It’s a tough, tough issue for all involved.
So…researchers from the Center for Fire, Rescue & EMS Health Research and Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) are looking for Firefighters and their spouses or partners to help with a confidential study about Firefighters and alcohol use. With funding from a FEMA grant, the researchers will be looking for ways to prevent heavy drinking and associated problems in the fire service. They would like to interview you no matter how much you drink. If you or your spouse/partner are willing to help with this project, please use the below link to complete their study form: Fire Service Alcohol Survey. For questions, you can email Dr. Sara Jahnke from the Center for Fire, Rescue & EMS Health Research at [email protected]
So while it’s sometimes funny to joke about, the issue itself and the negative impact it has is nothing to joke about – and the above is an opportunity to help. Nearly everyone of us on this job has been impacted either directly or indirectly due to the uncontrolled drinking of a sister or brother Firefighter, involving family and friends….
Take Care. Be Careful. Pass it On.
