Fire officials confirmed they found one dead after a residential fire in Centerville Saturday that also injured a firefighter.
Crews responded to 828 South Park Avenue in Centerville Saturday at approximately 7:34 a.m.
As they arrived, crews were notified there may be an individual still inside the residence. The fire department immediately began rescue efforts, a press release from the Centerville Fire Department said.
Centerville Fire Chief Mike Bogle said one person was pronounced dead at the scene on Saturday. The body has been transported to the state medical examiners office for an autopsy and positive identification.
A firefighter was injured and taken to the hospital. The firefighter, who was not identified, suffered from smoke inhalation and was transported from the scene to Mercy Medical Center in Centerville, then to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines by air ambulance, according to the press release.
The cause of the fire is undetermined and is being investigated by the Centerville Fire Department, Centerville Police Department and the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Assisting the Centerville Fire Department at the scene was the Mystic Fire Department, Moulton Ambulance, Midwest Medical Transport Ambulance, the Appanoose County Medical Examiner’s Office, Centerville Police Department, Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office and Alliant Energy.
